DIY 3D Wall art (artist skills not required)

I got this inspiration from an episode of Steven and Chris.  On their set one day they had this beautiful enlarged picture of and intricate butterfly on white canvas.  It really added a great punch of color to the set they were decorating. http://www.stevenandchris.com/. It gave me an idea to put together some DIY images for the room in your home that needs a little pizazz!!!
   Items needed:
  • cardstock paper ( u can get some at the dollar store.  I got  5 for a 1$!)
  • Permanent black marker
  • scissors
  • glue gun or some sort of adhesive ( regular glue will do just fine)
  • Shadow box ( they sell them at ikea for about 8$ but check your local dollar store first)
  • pencil
First think of an image or theme that makes you happy.  I chose the butterfly purely for its color context.  A flower would deliver the same result.  I searched stencil images and chose an intricate butterfly.

First instead of printing the stencil out on paper. (I'm really trying to be as green as possible)  I simply darkened the room and layed the cardstock over the computer screen and traced it with a pencil.  The light from the computer made it easy to see the outline.
Then I took my marker and colored in all the areas I wanted to be black.  (see pic).
Next I took my acrylic paints and painted in the areas that are white with colors of my choice.  The great thing about this is that you can totally customise your color scheme to match the decor in the room.  Now I chose arcylic paint simply because that is what I had on hand.  Markers, pencil crayons or any kind of craft paint will do.  OR just simply leave it black and white.

Cut out the butterfly and fix any white lines around the edges by running your black marker over them. Then cut the butterfly in half straight down the center. (see green butterfly)
Take your shadow box and glue down 1 piece of your image.  Take the other half of your image and fold over the bottom edge.  This is where you are going to apply the glue to make it stand outwards and look 3D. Glue it down in front of the first image.  VOILA a beautiful one-of-a-kind piece of wall art that you can brag about.  Experiment with different images and arrangements, and feel free to post your ideas.
